Knowing the most basic car insurance "flavor" as you make you comparison
Car insurance, like home insurance, comes in a number of different 'flavors' so to speak. The first flavor is liability coverage. Liability coverage is required in all but two of the 50 states in the U.S. When you go to your state Department of Motor Vehicles, and you ask them what you need to have in order to drive legally on the road, then chances are they'll give you anywhere from 2 to 3 basic numbers. For example, if your DMV gives you 25/50/30, how do you decipher those three numbers? Here's how:
- The first number is the minimum amount of liability coverage for bodily injury that you need to obtain. In the example above, you will be required to carry at least $25,000 in personal injury liability coverage for the driver of the other car. Whether or not you're obligated to pay this amount in the event of an accident will depend on your state's system, as well as whether or not you're determined to be the "at fault" driver.
- The second number (in the above case, "50") represents that minimum amount of per accident bodily injury liability you must carry. Basically, this means you must have at least $50,000 in bodily injury coverage for each accident. For example, if you are involved in an accident with more than one person, and you are also found to be at fault for the accident, then your insurance company will need to pay up to $50,000 in damages; however, if you're involved in an accident and cause damages (physical or otherwise) to only one individual, then your insurance company will only be required to pay up to $25,000
- The final number is the amount of property damage liability coverage you must have. Important to note with this number is that property damage liability will not provide coverage to your property – just the property of others in the event of the accident. If you wish to purchase coverage for your own vehicle, or the contents within the vehicle, then you will need to purchase comprehensive or collision coverage for yourself.
